What should you expect from the best acupuncture in Tempe?

Before your appointment

Eat something.
It isn’t necessary to have a full meal, but at least a snack can help your body have enough energy to maximize the treatment’s potential. Receiving acupuncture on an empty stomach may lead to dizziness or even fainting. Don’t drink alcohol immediately before or after treatment.

Use the restroom.
To avoid any discomfort during your session, we recommend you use the bathroom prior to treatment.

Wear loose clothing.
For your acupuncture treatment, you may not need to remove your clothes. Our acupuncturist may need to access areas under your clothes, but she will properly drape you so that only small portions of skin are exposed. Wearing loose clothing where the sleeves can be rolled up above the elbows and pant legs can be pulled up above the knees is also helpful.

First appointment

At your initial appointment, your acupuncturist will take an extensive history and cover questions beyond those you might receive in a typical physical. She may ask you, How does stress tend to manifest in your body? and Do you tend to be hot or cold? Answering these questions honestly will increase the accuracy of diagnosis and help your acupuncturist craft the best acupuncture treatment plan.

The cornerstone of Chinese medicine diagnosis is the pulse. In traditional Chinese medicine, there are three pulses on each side, relating to different organ systems.

Next, the acupuncturist will look at your tongue. Traditional Chinese Medicine views the tongue as a “microcosm” of the entire body. It gives information about the body including digestion and any stuck energy. The acupuncturist will look at the color of the tongue, the quality and color of the “fur” on the tongue as well as the general shape and any deviations in form. The acupuncturist may also palpate your abdomen or examine your meridians, or energy channels, with light manual pressure.

During the treatment

You will either lay face up or face down on a sturdy massage table as instructed by the acupuncturist. Then, you simply allow your mind and body to relax.

The acupuncturist will insert sterile, single-use needles in strategic points based on your needs. The needles are about as fine as hair. You may feel a slight twinge when they are inserted, though many report no sensation at all.

We provide you with a button to alert the practitioner if you need any assistance, as you are left alone to rest with relaxing music for approximately 30 minutes. Most people go into a deep meditative state or even take a nap.

Immediately after treatment

Sometimes after receiving an acupuncture treatment, you may feel a little lightheaded or “woozy.” If that is the case, please sit for a while in the reception area. In a few minutes, you’ll be relaxed and clear-headed.

Be prepared to see some slight bruises at places where the needles were inserted. This is normal and usually there is no pain associated with the bruise. You should alert your acupuncturist, as she can adjust her technique to try and minimize bruising.

Assessing progress

Acupuncture sends signals to the body to create healing pathways. You should expect multiple treatments to effectively address problems that have existed for a long period of time. These treatments should lead to longer and longer-lasting results as the body begins to re-pattern itself into proper physiological function. Your acupuncturist will help you track your progress throughout the treatments, including with photos. As you take stock of your progress, consider the status of the condition being treated as well as your general health. How is your mental clarity, energy, digestion, sleep, and emotional wellbeing?
